Okay, here is my quick and dirty fan fiction. There have been no edits, so it is no where near perfect (so be gentle). It is 1,276 words, and is my vision of how Luigi became Link...Enjoy.

Luigi’s Journey to Hyrule

Living in the shadow of your brother can be frustrating, to say the least. All his life Luigi has looked up to Mario, followed him to strange lands, and assisted in the rescue of his beloved princess. Through thick and thin, Luigi has always been there to help save Mario’s beloved Peach.

At the end of the day, Luigi sulks quietly home to his simple mushroom abode where his blue Yoshi happily awaits his return. He feeds prepares a bowl of apples for his faithful companion, sits back in his recliner, and sips on Peach flavored wine-which becomes salty as his tears drip steadily into the glass. His life has become routine and purposeless, and he longs for more.

Three glasses into his pity party, his shaky hand twitched spilling wine all over his overalls. Grabbing a tissue from the side table, he wiped away the mess. Dabbing his center pocket he remembered the warp whistle that he carried for Mario. Grasping it firmly in his hand, inspecting it for damage, a small crack was noticeable around the mouthpiece. The cold wine had caused the wood to contract and split.

Knowing Mario would be furious, he decided to blow into it just to see if it still worked. Wetting his lips, and adjusting his embouchure for maximum tone, he blew steadily through the mouthpiece. Testing its workability he fiddled with the finger holes, not intending to compose a soothing song. The room began to spin, Navi-his young yoshi frightenly jumped into his lap, and the world went dark.

When the light finally returned, Luigi thought that he had passed out from the combination of salty wine and forceful blowing into the whistle. His eyes took some time to adjust to the brightness. As he oriented himself, strange warmth flickered across his face. He swatted it away, only for it to return for more. Although it was physically different, his now focused eyes could see that this strange winged bug was actually his beloved yoshi.

Briskly, he stood up. His head still spinning from the trip, he looked around. The world was not his own. The landscape was strange, yet beautiful. A soft breeze tickled his face, sending a slight chill against his upper lip. Placing his hand below his nose, he noticed that his beloved moustache had disappeared during the warp. It wasn’t the first time this had happened, although it was not common.

Disoriented in his new surroundings, he decided to search for locals to enlighten him on his whereabouts. Still feeling dizzy, he decided to splash water from a small pond onto his face. Approaching it cautiously, he surveys for wild beasts. With none in sight, he dips his whole head into the cool water, only to feel a stinging sensation on contact. Quickly he jumps back from the water, a whiff of bleach assaults his nose.

Grabbing some dry leaves, he dabs his soaked head to rid himself from the stinging liquid. They do not soak up enough, so he removes his wine stained shirt to dab off the rest. The toxic water strips the color away from the fabric. A few of his hairs stuck to the shirt and were noticeably bleached to a shimmering blonde. He peered back into the water at his reflection, noticing his black locks were no more. A smile appeared on his lips as he admired his new look.

Lost in thoughtful vainness, a snapping branch startled him back to reality. Looking to his left, he noticed an old decaying tree. It almost appeared to have a face rotted into the front. Navi flew out of the whole, where the mouth would be and darted towards Luigi. She grabbed his suspender strap and pulled him towards the once glorious tree. He resisted at first, but even as small as she was, Navi was still persistent.

Still feeling the sting form the water, he approached the stump cautiously. A ray of light caught a metal object within the mouth and signaled its presence. Luigi poked it with a branch, but it wouldn’t budge. Cautiously, he reached in and pulled the item out. At first glance it appeared to be a simple wooded chest, but on top was carved was a beautiful set of three triangles linked together at the corner. The symbol was so simple, yet intrigued him nonetheless.

Navi annoyingly tugged at the rusty lock that secured the chest closed. Her small arms were not strong enough to budge the clasp, but Luigi easily busted the decayed metal. Inside he found a green cloak and pants. Quickly he changed out of his sine stained garbs into the new ones. After changing he grabbed the remaining items, a sturdy shield, an unused torch, and a letter.

The letter simply read, “Let the Tri-force Link you to victory on your journey.” He assumed that the three triangles was the Tri-force, but he wondered what his Journey would be.

Behind him, he heard more sticks cracking under the weight of someone’s feet. Navi hid behind him as he turned. An old man approached cautiously, surveying the stranger. Staying a few feet away, he asked Luigi who he was and what he desired from the sacred chest of the Deku. Luigi kept calm, and explained how he had come to arrive in this strange land, and the painful water, and the creepy tree.

The old man just stared for a moment after the explanation was through.

“Dear sir, I see you have journeyed far from home, only to arrive here at a time of dire need of a hero. You see our princess has been imprisoned within Death Mountain by the Evil Gannon. I know you are new to our land, but we need a hero. Can you help us?”

A sense of importance surged through Luigi. For once, he had the chance to become the hero and save the princess. Not giving it another thought, he agreed.

“Well then, it is set”, said the old man. “What is your name, son?”

“Me? My name is-a Lui…I mean-a Link”, Luigi took the opportunity to create a new persona for himself, one with a new beginning and a name borrowed from his connection to the tri-force.

“Link…hmmm….what a noble name. Please, Take this, it’s dangerous to go alone” the old man said as he handed Link a magnificent sword.

“Thank-a you! I love-a it, I cannot-a wait to complete-a my journey and save-a the princess!”

The old man smiled at Link’s excitement, but offered a word of advice before sending him off.

“Link, you have a strange way of talking. It might frighten the villagers and reveal that you are not from our world. I urge you to keep silent as often as possible. It will veil you in mystery, and portray you as dangerous to your enemies. “

Link just nodded in response. This was his chance, and he didn’t want to screw it up.

“Oh, and one more thing link.” whispered the old man. “Since your whistle is broken, please take this Ocarina. But please, be careful and only play it when you learn a melody, and understand its power. If you accidentally play a song of time travel, you will be transported to the past or future. Not only will you age according to the date you travel to, but your skills could be forgotten during the travels. Be sure to finish this quest before dabbling in others.”

With those final words, Link followed the dirt path to the town of Rauru, Navi in tow behind him. His adventure awaits, free from his brother’s shadow.

This is a fan fiction that was inspired by an article I wrote in Infendo.com. I made a joke about Luigi and Link being the same person, and offered for the readers to create a fanfiction in regards to the similarities between Link and Luigi. I hope you enjoy!
